How to Know If Your Marketing Is Working?

Let's run a quick marketing test.

Let's say you ran a pizza place.

It's a new place. Plenty of competition around.

You have to be competitive sooooo... what do you say?

What's going to be your super special thing?

The thing that sets you apart and gets you clients?

Usually what people say is:

"our sauce is really good"

"we have really good quality"

"our pizza is really nice"

"we have a special Italian recipe passed down from grandma"

"we use only fresh ingredients"

"our dough is really fluffy"

But here's the big problem:

Your competitor says the exact same thing!

Because everyone comes up with this stuff off the top of their head.

So you end up in a situation where everyone is saying roughly the same thing.

And for your customer it's impossible to tell who is actually telling the truth.

Which pizza is actually going to be good and which one is going to be lame?

So you'll have to compete on something that the others:

- won't do

or

- are not willing to do

or

- don't mention that they do

And that's exactly what Domino's Pizza did.

Back when they started they came up with a USP.

A Unique Selling Proposition that made them stand out.

That USP became famous. Here it is:

"Fresh hot pizza delivered in 30 minutes or less or it's free"

Understand that they mostly set up around college campuses.

I don't know if you know what happens at college campuses but aside from the studying there is also some partying.

And they smoke some funny herbs. And it makes them *hungry*.

And if you're HUNGRY you don't really care about the recipe from the old country and the special sauce and the flavor and the ingredients.

You just want it hot and you want it NOW because you've got the munchies.

Domino's grew at an incredible rate just based off that one USP.

A super strong statement that made them stand out immediately.

If you run a business, any business, it's a really good idea to have a USP.

If you don't have one now it's a good idea to develop one.

In fact, chances are good you already have it!

It's already there in your stuff, sitting there waiting for you to unearth it.

Excavate it like a dinosaur skeleton.
